They Won Our Freedom So Let's Use Our Indpendence Wisely

'Ireland was independent for 50 years before we actually exercised our independence when we joined the EU in 1973', according to Ireland's Future.ie. Only economic independence delivers real political independence. Access to Europe’s markets delivered real independence for Ireland.
Ireland’s Future.ie (www.irelandsfuture.ie) is an independent civil society group dedicated to explaining what the Lisbon Treaty is all about and why it’s so important to our future.
We can look at it in another way by comparing the current financial crisis and the currency crisis of the early 1990s.Total control and authority over our affairs is little use if we have no influence and impact on the events that affect our affairs.
Ireland had total control and authority and influence over monetary policy during the currency crisis of the early 1990s but we had absolutely no influence or impact on how that currency crisis affected Ireland. We devalued when we didn’t want to and our economy was greatly damaged by extremely high interest rates in our attempt to prevent devaluation.
Let’s compare that to the current financial crisis: Ireland’s interests have been protected by our membership of the euro. Working with our EU partners the worst possible scenarios of the economic crisis have been avoided – and for Ireland that means bankruptcy.
Give me real influence and real protection for Ireland’s interests any day over impotent, marginalised control of government decisions in splendid isolation to real life events.
It’s time to get real on Lisbon 2. Our interests and our future will be enhanced by a YES to Lisbon 2 because Lisbon 2 strengthens the EU and provides Ireland with an abundance of opportunities to exploit in the future.
