The Launch of Summer in Dublin City Centre 2010

Wednesday the 2nd of June 2010

Today (2nd June 2010), The Dublin City Business Association launched the ‘Summer in Dublin 2010’ programme of events, which is expected to bring over 500,000 visitors into the city centre this summer, according to Dublin City Council. The packed events schedule is designed to attract the increasing number of Irish families holidaying at home into Dublin City Centre.

This summer, due to the uncertainty created by the Icelandic volcano and various airline disputes, a significant number of holiday makers will be staying in Ireland and many are expected to visit the capital as their ‘staycation’ destination of choice according to Tom Coffey, CEO of Dublin City Business Association.

“We would expect an increase in the number of Irish people visiting Dublin City Centre which will provide a little boost for our capital city. Our capital provides an authentic and unique experience which fits with the Irish mood of a return to nostalgia. All Dubliners know that ‘Let’s go to town’ is the phrase used when talking about a great day out.

“Only last week Dublin was ranked as a better city to live in than Paris or London according to the Mercer Worldwide Quality of Life Survey. Dublin City Centre combines a unique ambiance with beautiful architecture, amusing characters and world class amenities in a truly original way. This is why people come to our capital and our abundance of free events for families and adults, young and old, take the Dublin City experience to an exciting level. Dublin remains standing as the most enjoyable and easily accessible destination in Ireland,” commented Mr Coffey

“We are anticipating a fine summer in Dublin and combining this with the wonderful programme of events on offer we are anticipating that increased numbers of people will come into Dublin City and enjoy the wide variety of activities. We expect over 500,000 people to attend Dublin City Centre events such as National Play Day, Kings of Concrete and the Dublin Viking Festival this summer,” commented Michael Sands, Communications Manager, Dublin City Council
This summer, old favourites return and a host of new events take to the stage in the capital. From lunch time concerts and literary delights to circus and street performance – whether visitors are in search of bustling atmosphere, cultural offerings, entertainment or shopping, Dublin City Centre has something to offer everyone this summer!

Highlights of the 2010 Summer Programme include The Summer Sensational Festival in Temple Bar , The Dublin Viking Festival at Wood Quay, The Street Performance World Championship in Merrion Square, the re-opening of the Natural History Museum and Lunchtime Outdoor Opera at the Civic Offices.
