Old and Leaking Pipes to be Replaced in Major investment for Dublin Regions Water Supply
Tuesday the 6th of February 2007
An investment of €118 million to replace Dublin's water mains will enable Dublin City Council to replace approximately 280km of old cast-iron water mains throughout Dublin, Bray and parts of counties Kildare and Wicklow under the Dublin Region Water mains Rehabilitation Project. Works will start this summer in the South East area of the city. The city council is committed to ensuring that householders, businesses, commuters and the public are fully aware of works well in advance so that disruption is minimised. The council will also do its utmost to facilitate special needs customers during any cut offs.
Many of the existing water mains are cast-iron laid up to 100 years ago and this project will replace them with new heavy duty polyethylene pipes. As a result of their age and increased workload, many of the dated mains are leaking or corroded which is resulting in the loss of millions of litres of high quality drinking water everyday and poor water pressure in some areas.
"We have spent considerable time planning this project and have decided to do the work in several small contracts to cause the least possible impact on householders, business' and commuters" says Tom Leahy, Deputy City Engineer. "Dublin City Council will publish and deliver a series of leaflets to householders and businesses to let them know well in advance and also nearer the time, so that they can make suitable arrangements to minimise the inconvenience while work is going on outside their premises. We'll also be putting in place a detailed traffic management plan for works that need to be carried out on main roads. These works will all be advertised in advance on roadside signage and through national and local media."
Work will commence in summer 2007 in the South East of the city and each contract will be focusing on one street at a time- this averages at about 80 homes per day. While works are taking place on particular streets, water will generally be turned off for less than 10 hours, from 8am until 6pm. It is possible that for some days before and after this, customers may experience further shorter water shut off periods at the beginning and end of each working day. In each case customers will be notified if and when this is likely to happen.
Some interesting Facts about supplying water to Dublin:
• Today, Dublin City Council provides 510 million litres of clean drinking water to
1.3 million people every day
• 100 years ago Dublin consumed only 86 million litres of water per day
• The majority of Dublin's watermains are cast iron and 800km of them were laid
80years ago
• It is anticipated that during the course of this project 20 million litres of water
which is currently lost from the system everyday will be saved
