New website called Ireland's Future.ie

Friday the 30th of January 2009

A new website called Ireland's Future.ie (www.irelandsfuture.ie) has been set up to outline why it makes sense for Ireland to take a second look at the Lisbon Treaty.

How we resolve the Lisbon Treaty impasse is critically important to Ireland because it will determine Ireland's future and the type of opportunities that will be available to us over the next 5 to 10 years. What is at stake is whether we put in place a framework for a successful future or we take a road where the destination is unknown.

The 5 key points made in the Ireland's Future.ie (www.irelandsfuture.ie) website are:

A Second Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty is Democracy in Action
1.       We face 26 EU partners who are clearly saying, we are happy to address your concerns but we will not engage in a wholesale re-negotiation of the Lisbon Treaty. If Europe listens to Irish voters concerns and responds with concessions to these concerns then that is democracy in action. In that scenario Irish voters would be given a green light to support a second referendum.

2.       We face a big choice, a big decision, as we seek to resolve the Lisbon Treaty impasse. That choice is about who we are as Irish people. The answer to that question is the answer to how we resolve the Lisbon Treaty impasse. Are we the type of people who get stuck in and work with others or are we the new awkward squad?

3.       Ireland will secure a better deal working with the EU then by going it alone when addressing all major issues, for example the monetary policy (the euro), climate change, energy security, and international trade deals. This is the core principle underpinning Ireland's engagement with the EU.

4.       Euro-scepticism is a game in which Ireland can only lose. Euro-scepticism has no place in Ireland because if Ireland adopts euro-scepticism we would become like hurlers on the ditch, leaning on the fence criticising the efforts of our EU partners while they attempt to tackle the challenges we all face today and tomorrow.

5.       Can you be a Pro-European and against the Lisbon Treaty? If you are pro-European you simply can't be anti-Lisbon. Saying you are a Pro-European and against the Lisbon Treaty is like saying you are very committed to fighting climate change and then buying a petrol guzzling SUV car!!
