Morris Tribunal finds gross indiscipline in Garda Síochána
Friday the 18th of August 2006
The Minister for Justice, Mr. M. McDowell is to introduce a new code of
discipline for the Gardai following the publication of the Morris
Tribunal Report.
"The Tribunal has been staggered by the amount of indiscipline and
insubordination it has found in the Garda Force. There is a small but
disproportionately influential, core of mischief making members who
will not tell the truth and who have no respect for their Officers" -
reported Mr. Justice Frederick Morris.
There has been an undercurrent of dissatisfaction in the business
community at the less than satisfactory performance of some Gardai over
the last few years. Business people often feel they are not getting the
service they are entitled to especially in response time and proactive
management of streets and low level crime of shoplifting, theft and
drug dealing on streets.
The Morris Tribunal has done this country a huge service. Let us all
hope that this reforming Minister for Justice introduces the necessary
changes quickly and in full that will give us all a Garda Force that we
can be proud of.
Accountability and obedience to authority are not issues that are appropriate and proper matters for industrial relations.
