Minister McDowell announces Garda Reserve Regulations

Monday the 14th of August 2006

The making of the Garda Reserve regulations allows the Garda Síochána to commence the recruitment of reserve members of the Force. The recruitment of reserve members is being undertaken as part of the forthcoming recruitment campaign, which will also seek applications for full-time Garda trainees. The recruitment campaign has started and details will be available in the press and on radio and on the Garda website www.garda.ie
Making the announcement Minister McDowell said, "The Garda Reserve is an exciting and important development in policing in Ireland and will be a valuable support for the Garda Síochána. It will enhance its capacity to respond to emerging policing challenges and will allow for more Gardai to be visibly deployed in communities.  Reserve members will provide support to full-time members and will help strengthen links between the force and local communities throughout the country. I would urge anyone who would like to play a part in this new area and era of policing to apply in the forthcoming recruitment campaign."
The regulations and an information booklet on the Garda reserve are available on the website of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform at
