It's Time to Start Talking About What's Really in the Lisbon Treaty

Tuesday the 30th of June 2009

Now that the EU has fully and comprehensively addressed the concerns Irish voters had about Lisbon 1, its time to focus on what really is in the Lisbon Treaty. 'The Lisbon Treaty is full of opportunities and exciting initiatives for Ireland and the EU which will be lost if we say NO to Lisbon 2', according Ireland's Future.ie

Ireland’s Future.ie (www.irelandsfuture.ie) is an independent civil society group dedicated to explaining what the Lisbon Treaty is all about and why it’s so important to our future.

Here are just three exciting initiatives contained in the Lisbon that make Lisbon 2 a very compelling Treaty for Ireland and the EU:
1. Combats the trafficking of men, women and children: Half a million people were trafficked through the EU last year. The Lisbon Treaty addresses this problem by providing for greater co-ordination among EU police forces to tackle this horrific crime.
2. Strengthens the EU's Peacekeeping Capabilities: Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General, expressed his hope in May 2008 that the Lisbon Treaty would come into force because it will strengthen EU peacekeeping capabilities by provide greater co-ordination among member states.
3. Places Values at the Centre of the EU's Decision Making Process: The Lisbon Treaty will put in place an ongoing regular dialogue between the EU and the EU's Religious and Philosophical Communities. This dialogue will enable EU law makers, as they initiate and refine EU law, the opportunity to explore the right balance between freedom and responsibility and between the individual and society. EU law will be richer for this dialogue.
Each of the three initiatives is a compelling reason to support Lisbon 2 on its own, together they make the case for Lisbon 2 overwhelming. Let's make all the opportunities and initiatives contained in the Lisbon Treaty available to Ireland and the EU by voting YES to Lisbon 2 next October.
