• Rejuvenating Dublin's Tourism Product

  Dublin City Business Association commissioned Jerome Casey and Felim O’Rourke to undertake a study of tourism in Dublin and to make least-cost recommendations for its rejuvenation. The World Tourism Organisation concluded (in relation to Ireland) that "there appears to be very little correlation between marketing spending by National Tourism Organisations and international arrivals". 
  

  Within Ireland, there is a mismatch between the Irish tourism market and the public resources devoted to it. 

  33 existing tourist attractions in Dublin were reviewed, and low-cost initiatives suggested for their improvement.

  From 2000 – 2010 Ireland’s share of world tourism visitors has fallen sharply. In 2004, Ireland changed from being a destination country for incoming tourists to an origin country for Irish, outgoing tourists.

  Dublin must move from passive approval of tourist activities to an active development of tourism as a priority industry in regenerating the city’s economy.

Independence Day

Thursday the 16th of February 2006

On Easter Sunday 2006 the Irish Government will celebrate Ireland's Independence. This is a timely decision as our country prospers economically, accommodates people from other states to live, work and visit. Above all Ireland enjoys a peaceful participatory democracy, which has created the foundation of our success.
Visiting American shores after the American revolution Alexis de Tocqueville wrote  "It is difficult to draw a man out of his own circle to interest him in the destiny of the State, because he does not see clearly understand what influence the destiny of the state can have on his own lot. But if it is proposed to make a road cross the end of his estate, he will see at a glance that there is a connection between the small public affair and his greatest private affairs, and he will discover, without its being shown to him, the close tie that unites private to general interest."
The 1916 Rebellion laid the foundation for independence, which allowed us the freedom to develop our democracy and our economy. Many of the present generation see these events as history from a different time. We in Ireland need to explain ourselves to this new IT generation and to our new immigrant workers and citizens in the interests of a cohesive civic society and to ensure that Ireland develops as a fully mature society where multi cultural residents are fully integrated into our history, our economy and our society.
DCBA believes that the GPO should be converted into Independence Hall housing a museum and display of Irish history from ancient times to the present modelled on Philadelphia which is the historical capital of the USA where their authorities have built America's Independence Hall celebrating their own history. It has become a huge centre for Americans and overseas visitors who learn about their history and founding of their nation as an independent state not subject to Britain. Indeed it is now an attractor of economic activity in Philadelphia.
The GPO is an important iconic historical building in our country and should be used to better advantage for the benefit of the country. An Post is just another large utility that could be located elsewhere leaving the GPO free to be used in the interests of the Nation.
