• Rejuvenating Dublin's Tourism Product

  Dublin City Business Association commissioned Jerome Casey and Felim O’Rourke to undertake a study of tourism in Dublin and to make least-cost recommendations for its rejuvenation. The World Tourism Organisation concluded (in relation to Ireland) that "there appears to be very little correlation between marketing spending by National Tourism Organisations and international arrivals". 
  

  Within Ireland, there is a mismatch between the Irish tourism market and the public resources devoted to it. 

  33 existing tourist attractions in Dublin were reviewed, and low-cost initiatives suggested for their improvement.

  From 2000 – 2010 Ireland’s share of world tourism visitors has fallen sharply. In 2004, Ireland changed from being a destination country for incoming tourists to an origin country for Irish, outgoing tourists.

  Dublin must move from passive approval of tourist activities to an active development of tourism as a priority industry in regenerating the city’s economy.

Film making in Dublin a growing business

Bord Scannán na hÉireann / the Irish Film Board warmly welcomes new improvements to Section 481, the Irish tax incentive for Film, recently announced in the Finance Bill by Minister for Finance Brian Cowan.

The Irish government has introduced new measures to strengthen the tax incentive for film and television productions, improving Ireland's competitive position as a location for International film production.

The new improvements mean that the percentage of expenditure that is eligible for tax relief will be raised to 80% for all films, up from the existing levels of 55% or 66% (depending on the film budget) and the ceiling on qualifying expenditure for any one film will be increased from €15 million to €35 million.

"These significant improvements to Section 481 further demonstrate the Irish government's on-going commitment to the growth of the Irish film industry and in particular Minister John O'Donoghue's continued support. These new measures will incentivise film producers to spend a higher percentage of their budget in Ireland which means more employment and an increased usage of Irish infrastructure" said James Morris, Chairman of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.

"This is a very significant move by the government which will give Irish filmmakers renewed confidence in their own talents and their ability to compete internationally" said Simon Perry, CEO, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board.

This good news also follows the recent increase made by Minister O'Donoghue in the capital budget for the Irish Film Board, which has been increased by 21% for 2006.
