Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project

Wednesday the 12th of April 2006

The Dublin Region Watermains Rehabilitation Project has been established to bring Dublin's old pipes up to scratch, identifying and replacing the old watermains that have outlived their shelf-life. This will assist in the reduction of leaks in the worn out pipes. It is estimated that up to 800km are over 80 years old.

Through the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, a budget of €118 has been provided for the rehabilitation of the pipes, with further funds to be provided by the Local Authorities to be expanded between 2006 and 2012.

Temporary Site Investigations will take place around the Dublin Region, involving the digging of trial holes 1.2 metres deep at 200 metre intervals to check the condition and size of the watermains in every location.

These Site Investigation works will be taking place in the following places:
• Merrion Road South-Merrion/Sandymount
• Merrion Road North-Sandymount
• Pembroke Road-Ballsbridge
• Crumlin Cross-Crumlin

The construction work for the project is due to commence in mid 2007 and will be phased over a five year time frame, which will lessen the disruptive impact of the works. No work will commence until extensive public consultation is completed and there is ample time to brief anyone who may be affected. The project is expected to save a minimum of 20 million litres of water every day.
