Dublin Port Tunnel

Wednesday the 11th of January 2006

There has been a lot of hot air around the issue of the Dublin Port Tunnel. Stories about leaks, height, safety delays etc. all dominated a fatuous debate in the media. Any major infrastructure project is not only costly, often late but always disruptive and requires change in society. The announcement by the Minister for Transport banning HGVs from fast lanes on motorways is very welcome so also is the announcement from Dublin City Council that HGVs will be confined to one lane in each direction in the Dublin Port Tunnel. This will provide the basis for safer mobility in the tunnel. What is now required is to enhance enforcement on HGVs in City Centre and create a quality environment for citizens to live in work in and visit the city centre.
