Dublin City Council adopt budget for 2007

Wednesday the 29th of November 2006

City Manager John Tierney, speaking as he unveiled Dublin City Councils 2007 budget said over €4 billion would be spent on regeneration housing projects for the city, mostly apartments, over the next decade.

Mr. Tierney said €4,400 would also be spent for every citizen of Dublin next through a combination of improved and expanded services and the council's capital programme.

Among the planned improvements are: the introduction of council run crèches, longer opening hours for libraries and additional sport and recreational facilities.

"The aim is to have Dublin as a benchmark for quality but still to be distinctly Dublin," said Mr. Tierney, the former manager of both Galway City and Fingal County.

More than €4 billion will be spent on regeneration housing projects over the next decade, mostly apartments, almost 1,000 new apartments to be built each year over the next three years. The council also said that the lack of development land was forcing it to deliver higher density housing in the capital.

Assistant City Manager Brendan Kenny said the council was in the process of developing a blueprint for modern apartment living. "We've already published a policy document dealing with the complexity of management companies. It will provide developers and homeowners with a template for good management of their new homes, their surroundings and common spaces."

On Monday 27th November the City Council voted by 33 to 16 to adopt the city budget which includes expenditure of under €900 million plus a capital programme of €1.35 billion. House hold collection charges increased by 5% and business rates by just under 4% for the year 2007.
