DCBA Welcomes Grafton Street Area ACA Plan
Thursday the 23rd of March 2006
The Dublin City Business Association
today welcomed the proposed introduction of an Architectural
Conservation Area Plan for Grafton Street and surrounding side streets
by Dublin City Council.
According to Tom Coffey, CEO, DCBA "The DCBA has been
concerned for some time that the standards in Grafton Street have not
been what they should be and we have been calling for an ACA for the
area for the last two years. As the main shopping street for many years
Grafton Street has unique heritage and character and long history
dating back to the early 17th Century which needs to be protected and enhanced."
The Grafton Street Area ACA requires that all works to the main
facades of buildings will become subject to planning permission. It
also gives the Planning Authority of Dublin City Council special
planning control of mixed uses in the area. The third core element of
the plan includes a street improvement scheme to be carried out by the
Local Authority e.g. street furniture, paving etc.
The DCBA was involved in the original regeneration plan of Henry
Street/O'Connell Street/Smithfield areas, which have proven to be a
great success. Footfall on O'Connell Street has increased by 25% since
last year as a result of the regeneration of the area.
An Architectural Conservation Area is a place area group of
structures or townscape that is of special architectural historical
archaeological artistic scientific social technical interest or value
or that contributes to the appreciation of a protected structure. The
ACA Plan is the measure by which this special character or value can be
protected and enhanced.
