DCBA calls for stronger enforcement against illegal cigarette black market

Monday the 5th of October 2009

With Government borrowing around €71 million a day to fund the public sector it is unacceptable that the State Sector has failed to adequately tackle the black market in illegal cigarettes.
It does appear that the State Sector is inflexible and ill prepared nationally for the reorganisation of our economy and method of governance required to meet the present challenge and restore our country to competitiveness and stop forced emigration. It is estimated that the black market in illegal cigarettes has doubled in Ireland over the past 2-3 years and the loss to the Exchequer is around €750 million p a.

DCBA calls on the Government to enforce the law of the land and ensure that cigarettes are sold legally and in tax compliant outlets that are properly licensed.
