CSO and Central Bank Reports Reveal a Changing Ireland
Thursday the 27th of July 2006
The recent census carried out by the CSO has revealed that the population at 4.2 million has not been as high since 1861.
Recent statistics from the Central Bank also illustrates how Ireland
has changed. Private car ownership has jumped from 275 per 1,000
population in 1995 to 402 in 2005. Internet connection as a percentage
of households has risen from 38.2% in 1995 to 45.1% in 2005.
Mobile phone ownership is now at 98% of the population.
General Government Debt as a percentage of GDP has fallen from 81% in 1995 to 29.4% in 2005.
Real GDP growth has fallen from 9.6% in 1995 to 4.5% in 2004 and rose to 4.7% in 2005.
Retail bank interest rates while presently low for residential
mortgages could be very problematic and damaging to disposable spend if
interests rates were to rise to around 6%.
