'An Bord Snip Nua' Report published
Thursday the 16th of July 2009
Those who have taken the time to read the report from “The Special Group on Public Service Numbers and Expenditure Programmes will realise that serious decisions to save our country are needed immediately.
The present cost of the public service, (administration, politicians, judges, health and education workers) at 35% of all government spending has become excessive and needs to be cut.
A reduction of 17,000-25,000 public servants does not mean a drop in the quality of services. Indeed higher productivity and a removal of outdated work practices that prevent quality service to consumers for their tax euros would be beneficial for every citizen.
The fact that higher management levels in the civil service grew by 82% (1997-2009) when civil service numbers as a whole increased by 27% is symbolic of an Irish public service focused on paper pushing rather than real service provision and value output for taxpayers money.
Tom Coffey, CEO DCBA, said “DCBA welcomes this report but calls on Government to reduce the pay of elected representatives and senior public servants on over €100,000 pa by 20% immediately. Government must lead by example.”
Views expressed by some in the trade union movement to resist the necessary cuts and changes in work practices by way of public sector strikes were criticised by DCBA spokesman Tom Coffey who said “These calls are tantamount to treason against the true interests of the State and its citizens. Government has a duty to govern responsibly and must do so.”
