85 % of Recorded Headline Crime are Thefts, Burglaries and Fraud

Theft Burglary or Fraud accounted for 85% of all headline crime reported to the Gardaí in the first quarter of 2007. There were 21,803 incidents reported in the quarter in comparison to 23,168 in the same period in 2006. This is a decrease of 5.9%.
The number of offences classified as Murder or Manslaughter fell to 62 in the 12 months ending in the first quarter of 2007. This is compared to a total of 67 in the previous 12 month period. In the first quarter of 2007 there were 10 such incidents recorded, in comparison with 14 in the same quarter of 2006.
In relation to Assault causing harm offences, there was a 10.2% decrease recorded in the first quarter of 2007 when compared with the same period of 2006. However, in the 12 month period ending in the first quarter, the number of such incidents rose by 247, an increase of 6.7%.
In relation to Sexual Offences, most offences in this category showed large reductions. Overall, the number of offences in this category dropped by 44.5% and 16.6% in the quarter and 12 month period respectively. There was an increase of 22.4% in the recording of Arson in relation to the first quarter of 2006 and the same period of 2007. In the 12 months ending in the first quarter of this year, the total number of recorded Arson was 1,735 which is a total increase of 19.4%
Overall, recorded drug offences were up 699 (22.2%) in the twelve month period. Offences of Possession of drugs for sale or supply increased by 545 (20.6%) in the 12 month period. All offences in the category of drugs showed increases in the first quarter of 2007.
Offences that fall under the Theft category made up 56% of all headline offences in the 12 month period ending in the first quarter of 2007. Over the 12 month period, Theft form MPV was down by 520 (3.8%). In the same period, recorded theft from a shop incidents rose by 1,225 (7.2%). Recorded burglary offences included in this category fell by 3,406 (12.6%) in the 12 month period ending in the first quarter of 2007. In that period burglary offences accounted for 23% of all recorded headline crime.
In the 12 month period ending in the first quarter of 2007, there were decreases of 10.9% and 23.1% in the number of offences recorded under the headings of Robbery of an establishment/institution and robbery of cash/goods in transit respectively. Robberies from the person however showed an increase of 15.5%. 5,124 incidents of Fraud were recorded in the 12 month period ending in the first quarter of 2007. This represents and increase of 22.5% on the previous 12 month period.
