74% believe Government failing to tackle alcohol abuse

Alcohol Action Ireland have commissioned an opinion poll carried and by Millward Brown IMS. This poll reveals that nearly three quarters of those polled believe the Government is failing to tackle alcohol abuse.
Dr. Joe Barry of Alcohol Abuse Ireland is reported as saying that in Ireland there are over 150,000 regular underage drinkers and that the French have severely restricted alcohol advertising. DCBA has for some years now consistently expressed concern at the large numbers of youths drunk in public places and the failure of those in charge to prosecute those in the drinks sector who are selling this legal drug to underage or drunk persons.
The failure of the Department of Health to do anything meaningful to tackle this issue is a disgrace and inexplicable. At weekends over 40% of those in accident and emergency are drunk, genuine patients are on trolleys and staff are sometimes assaulted. Yet the department of Health is silent on this.
DCBA has asked for alcohol advertising in Ireland to be banned, it is bizarre that the Minister for Health has failed to do so and produced a system in reality decided on by the alcohol drinks sector. The link between alcoholic drink advertising, sport events and festival events is an essential element in alcohol marketing strategy to glamorise alcohol and to increase sales. The public opinion poll illustrates the growing gap between civic society, the Department of Health and the alcoholic drinks sector.
