The Guinness Connection
Le Belem was launched in 1896 as a working ship until 1914 when it was sold to the Duke of Westminster and turned into a luxury yacht.
In 1921, Sir Arthur Ernest Guinness convinced the Duke to sell the yacht to him where he worked and lived as he sailed around the world on what he had now called Fantome II. In 1939, the Fantome II was put out of commission due to the outbreak of World War 2 and was forgotten about until 1951. In 1949 the Guinness family put the ship up for sail after the death of Sir Arthur and it was subsequently bought by an Italian sailing school. In 1979 it came back to the ownership of the French where it has stayed ever since.
