BUILDING INDUSTRY BULLETIN

Tuesday the 12th of April 2011

Over seven days in November, Ireland ceded the remains of its economic sovereignty to the IMF/EU. Ireland is only now discovering how difficult it is to be a client state of unwilling lenders. The best approach by Government to relieve Ireland of its unsustainable debt burden is to make the economy super-competitive and to work hard on a “bail-in” by the EU, with help also from the US. GNP will continue to decline in 2011.

The forecast for 2010 shows construction volumes falling by 21% and prices by 8%. Worst-affected sectors will be Public Buildings and Civil Engineering, which will see their volumes decline by 32% and 36% respectively, due to cutbacks to the published and probable levels of investment under the Public Capital Programme.

This seems to me to make eminent sense especially if we could also use the line as a way of bringing the natural gas from Mayo to Sligo. (Published in the Sligo Champion in October 2009.)

Towards a Second Republic

Tuesday the 8th of February 2011

DCBA were concerned in 2004 (see Magill Paper) at the problems in our economy. Now on foot of the construction fuelled frenzy we are even more concerned to see where that has led our country.
The first Republic is broken. The political and public service elite have mismanaged our country. Casino banking profits were privatised and their debt has been socialised. The culture of secrecy in politics and public administration has assisted ineffective incompetent government, scandalous waste of taxpayers’ money and little or no accountability.
DCBA puts forward this 10 Point Manifesto Towards a Second Republic and to start effective Reform.
